Mobile - Glossary
Roaming
Using your mobile subscription abroad on another operator's network. In the EU/EEA roaming is often unrestricted.
Roaming means using your mobile subscription abroad on a local operator's network. In the EU/EEA roaming is regulated: you can use your subscription at the same price as at home (calls, messages, data). However, there is a fair-use quota for data based on the monthly fee of your subscription.
In countries outside the EU roaming charges can be very high - per-minute pricing of 1-3 EUR/min and data charges up to 10-50 EUR/MB. With most operators, non-EU roaming is blocked or limited by default.
When travelling outside the EU it pays to use Wi-Fi, get a local prepaid SIM or buy your operator's travel pack. In Finland all operators offer various travel packs for the most popular destinations.
