Mobile - Glossary
Data speed (Mbit/s)
A mobile subscription's data transfer speed in megabits per second. Indicates how fast data is transferred.
Data speed is given in megabits per second (Mbit/s) and tells you how quickly the subscription transfers data. In Finland mobile speeds are typically 100, 300, 600 or 1,000 Mbit/s. A faster subscription costs more, but for most uses 100-300 Mbit/s is excellent.
In practice many factors affect the speed: network congestion, distance to the base station, the walls of the building and the device's capabilities. The speed quoted by operators is the maximum, not a guaranteed speed.
100 Mbit/s is enough for HD video, video calls, gaming and normal web browsing. 300+ Mbit/s is worth it if you use the subscription as your home connection or regularly download large files.

Frequently asked questions
What data speed is enough?
For normal use (social media, video, browsing) 100 Mbit/s is enough. If you use the subscription as the only internet connection for several devices, 300+ Mbit/s is better.
What is the difference between download and upload speed?
Download speed tells you how quickly you receive data (watching videos, downloading). Upload speed tells you how quickly you send data (video calls, sharing files).
Why is my connection slower than the advertised speed?
The advertised speed is the maximum. Actual speed depends on the distance to the base station, network load, the building's materials and the device's capabilities.
