Grid operators and electricity distribution prices

Electricity distribution is a regional monopoly: each area is served by a single grid operator responsible for delivering electricity to consumers. You cannot choose your grid operator - it is determined by your address.

What does the distribution price include?

The electricity distribution price consists of two parts: a fixed monthly base fee (€/month) and a consumption-based distribution fee (c/kWh). In addition, electricity tax is charged on the distribution bill. The distribution price covers the construction, maintenance and outage preparedness of the electricity grid.

Does the grid operator affect the electricity bill?

Yes, significantly. The electricity distribution price can make up 30-50% of the total electricity bill. Distribution prices cannot be compared on the open market, but the sale price can. Check your local distribution operator and compare electricity providers to find the lowest total price.
