Choosing an electricity contract in 2026
Choosing an electricity contract is one of the easiest ways to save on household expenses. Finland has dozens of electricity companies, and comparing them is easy - switching electricity companies costs nothing, and your supply is never interrupted.
How is the price of electricity determined?
The price of electricity consists of three parts: the sale price (electricity company), the transfer price (grid operator) and electricity tax. You can only compare and switch sale prices - the transfer price depends on your address and grid operator. Check your municipality's grid operator on our city pages.
Spot price or fixed contract?
With a spot-price contract you pay an hourly rate that varies with demand and supply. With a fixed contract the price is agreed in advance for the whole contract period. Spot pricing is often cheaper over the long term but requires flexibility in timing your consumption. Read more about spot pricing.
Housing type affects the contract choice
A flat dweller's electricity consumption is only a fraction of a detached house's. That's why it's important to take housing type and heating method into account when choosing a contract. In an electrically heated detached house the difference in margin can mean hundreds of euros a year, whereas in a flat the same difference is tens of euros.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find the cheapest electricity contract?
Compare electricity contracts with Sopimusvahti's comparison tool. Enter your consumption and see the total costs of spot-price and fixed contracts from different companies.
Is a spot-price or fixed contract better?
Spot-price contracts are often cheaper over the long term, but the price varies hour by hour. A fixed contract offers predictability. The choice depends on your consumption and risk tolerance.
How do I switch electricity contracts?
Switching is free and easy. Sign a new contract with the company of your choice - the new company handles the termination of the old contract. Your electricity supply is never interrupted.
Does my address affect the price of electricity?
The sale price of electricity is the same throughout Finland. The transfer price, however, depends on the local grid operator. Check the transfer prices in your area on our municipality page.
