Electricity - Glossary
Comparing electricity contracts
The process of comparing different suppliers' offers to find the most affordable electricity contract.
Comparing electricity contracts means evaluating different suppliers' offers to find the best value for money. In Finland the electricity market was liberalised in 1998, and the consumer is free to choose the energy supplier - the network company is fixed according to the place of residence.
It's worth comparing especially when a contract ends or when you move, but you can do it at any time. Signing a new contract is easy: pick a contract and fill in your details - the new supplier handles the termination of the old contract for you. Your electricity is not cut off during the switch.
The savings potential is significant: in a detached house you can save 200-1,000 euros per year by switching from an expensive contract to an affordable one. In a flat the saving is typically 50-150 euros per year.

Frequently asked questions
How do I compare electricity contracts?
Compare contracts in Sopimusvahti's price comparison, pick the cheapest one and sign a new contract with the supplier. There is no need to terminate the old contract separately.
How often should I compare electricity?
At least once a year or whenever your current contract ends. With a spot-priced contract comparing is less frequent, because the price already tracks the market.
Will my electricity be cut off during the switch?
No. Electricity delivery continues normally throughout the switch. The network company doesn't change, only the energy supplier.
